Vasarely Museum. Installed in the imposing Zichy Mansion (Zichy kastély), built in 1757, this renovated and rehung gallery contains some 150 works of Victor Vasarely (or Vásárhelyi Győző, as he was known before he emigrated to Paris in 1930), the late 'father of op art'. Op art is short for 'optical art', a style of abstract visual art.

Relevant VASARELY MUSEUM The Hungarian-French painter Victor Vasarely can be considered to be the most important representative of optical painting or "op-art". According to Vasarely, movement is "the violence with which structures cause a direct stimulus on the recoil of the eye".

Victor Vasarely bequeathed the collection of the Vasarely Museum to the state in the 1980s. One of the wings of the Baroque Zichy mansion, Óbuda was redesigned to accommodate the permanent display of works personally selected by the artist. The museum opened in 1987; it is one of the best endowed Vasarely collections in Central Europe.

A Szépművészeti Múzeum Vasarely Múzeuma gyűjteményét Victor Vasarely a '80-as években adományozta a magyar államnak. A saját maga válogatta művek állandó bemutatására az óbudai barokk Zichy kastély egyik szárnyépülete került átalakításra. A múzeum 1987-ben nyitotta meg kapuit, az egyik leggazdagabb Vasarely gyűjtemény Közép-Kelet Európában.

In 1969 Vasarely, backed by his formidable political contacts, succeeded in obtaining permission from the Hungarian government to organise a solo show in Budapest. Held in the Műcsarnok (Art Hall), this was the largest exhibition of his career, and in just a few weeks it attracted 150,000 visitors.
